What You Will Experience On The Imperial Cities Tour

Imperial Cities Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN CASABLANCA

Upon arrival in Casablanca, the economic capital of Morocco, you will be met and transferred by your accessible, private accessible transport driver to your Casablanca hotel, where you will check-in and relax for the afternoon. If desired, you will have the opportunity to head out to see some of the city, perhaps including a visit to popular Ain Diab, a flat and beautiful corniche along the Atlantic Ocean.

Meals: Dinner Included; Dinner at the Hotel/Riad

Accessibility Notes: Casablanca, as a more modern and international city, is fairly flat and accessible.  Since you will have private, accessible transport, you will not have to worry about accessible transport – you will already be taken care of by your personal driver.

DAY 2: RABAT & FES | RABAT DRIVING TOUR

Today you will depart from Casablanca with your private driver towards Fes. On route, you will stop at Rabat, the capital city and residence of the Moroccan King. Enjoy lunch and a time to explore the amazing sites of this beautiful coastal city including Le Tour Hassan, King’s Palace, and the Kasbah of the Udayas. After lunch, you will continue on to Fes – the cultural and spiritual capital of Morocco.

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner Included; Dinner at the Hotel/Riad

Accessibility Notes: Like Casablanca, Rabat is flat and generally more accessible.  There may be occasional curbs that may require assistance to negotiate.  Le Tour Hassan is flat and easy to access.  The mausoleum has a flight of stairs and thus, is not accessible to see the inside for travelers in wheelchairs.

DAY 3: FES | FES MEDINA TOUR

Today, you will venture into the medina with your personal, English-speaking guide along our specifically designed wheelchair adapted route. This is one of the world’s largest walled in cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the narrow, winding streets lined with fresh fruit, mounds of spices, intricately woven Berber carpets and many other art treasures of Morocco. A visit to the Kings Palace, the Jewish quarters and the local pottery artisans are just a few places you can experience. For lunch, eat at a traditional restaurant with handcrafted Moroccan dishes in the heart of the old medina. After lunch, complete the tour in this historic city and return to your hotel to freshen up before dinner.

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner Included; Dinner at a Local Restaurant

Accessibility Notes: The Fes medina is set on a hill.  We have developed a few routes through the medina that cross the old city with minimal barriers. Expect some uneven paths of travel throughout the medina – it is a 1,200 year old city after all! What is unparalleled in Fes is the hospitality of the residents that will do everything they can to make sure that you feel welcome here!

DAY 4: MEKNES, VOLUBILIS & FES | VOLUBILIS GUIDED TOUR

Today you head to the past as you imagine what life was like 2,000 years ago in the Roman empire when you go to Volubilis to explore ancient Roman ruins. Although not paved (we recommend a manual wheelchair and hiring a pusher for the tour), these well-preserved ruins nestled on a beautiful countryside are not to be missed. Afterward, take a driving tour of Meknes and enjoy lunch in Moulay Idriss, one of the holiest cities in Morocco.  Return to Fes – a city that has sat on the same hillside for more than a millennium.

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner Included; Dinner at Hotel/Riad

Accessibility Notes: Volubilis has a rougher path of travel.  We highly suggest a manual wheelchair and a pusher for this tour.  There are more passable routes that our guides will take you on, but this tour does require an adventurous spirit to navigate the uneven paths of travel!

DAY 5: MARRAKECH

After an early breakfast, you will depart for Marrakech. Enjoy the day traveling South, taking in the scenery of beach and mountainous views that will surround you as you go. Not to worry – we have researched the accessible bathrooms along the way to make this longer drive day (approximately 6 hours) very comfortable for you!

Once in Marrakech, you will check into your hotel and then head off to the famous Djemaa el-Fna – the center square of the medina. The unique Djemaa el-Fna is one of the center attractions of Marrakech. Coming alive at night with the local storytellers, entertainers, and mouth-watering barbeque pits, the square is well worth a visit. A quiet cup of tea on the terrace of an adjacent café provides a spectacular aerial view of the bustling square.

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner Included; Dinner at the Hotel/Riad

Accessibility Notes: Djemaa el-Fna is a very flat square with minimal barriers.  Not all cafés will have accessibility.  There are a few that have ramps and even an accessible bathroom.  The square is well set up to explore in a wheelchair as there is ample space and few curbs to negotiate. Our drivers are well equipped to ensure that you are able to experience this with as much ease as possible.

DAY 6: MARRAKECH | MARRAKECH MEDINA TOUR

Today takes you on a guided tour of Marrakech – the southern pearl of Morocco. You will discover the famous Saadian Tombs, the serenity of the Marjorelle Gardens, bustling souk (market), and many other hidden treasures. When it comes to Marrakech, there is no shortage of experiences to enjoy.  Whether your heart beats for culinary delights, souvenir acquisition, or rich history, Marrakech will not disappoint! After lunch, you will continue with an exploration of the magnificent Koutoubia Mosque and the souks of Marrakech.

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner Included; Dinner at a Local Restaurant

Accessibility Notes: Marrakech is an excellent city for wheelchair users to visit.  With vastly flat paths of travel, much of the medina is quite accessible. There will be some rough paths of travel and you may encounter some small steps. Our guides will take care to avoid accessibility barriers during your medina tour.

DAY 7: CASABLANCA | HASSAN II MOSQUE TOUR

It is time to return to Casablanca where you started this fantastic journey. In the early afternoon, you will visit Hassan II, the 5th largest mosque in the world. It is the only mosque in Morocco that allows non-Muslims to enter and is mostly accessible to wheelchair users. The architecture and exquisite details are a wonderful site to see and a great cultural “bookend” to your trip to Morocco.

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner Included; Dinner at a Local Restaurant

Accessibility Notes: The Hassan II Mosque is vastly accessible with a small step to enter.  The washing rooms are inaccessible due to a large flight of stairs.  Moroccan hospitality will often lead to an offer to carry a wheelchair user down to this area.  This is not recommended for obvious safety reasons but you can attempt this at your own risk!

DAY 8: DEPARTURE FROM CASABLANCA

With lifelong memories, stories of your journey to share and perhaps even some new historical expertise, your driver – and new friend – will make sure you get to the airport with plenty of time for departure at Casablanca Mohammed V Airport.

Meals: Breakfast Included

Imperial Cities Tour Accessibility

Peace of mind is vital when booking international travel.  This is especially true for accessible travel.  There is a time and a place for surprises – and accessibility is not one of them.  When you book an accessible tour, you need to know what you will encounter.

General

The Imperial Cities Tour is rated to have “High Accessibility” on our access scale.  As with all of our tours, you will have accessible transport and a wide range of accessible hotels and/or riads to choose from year round.

Items to Note

Rest Stops

Along the autoroute, there are regular rest stops with accessible bathrooms.

Accommodations

All of our accommodations are personally verified by us to ensure appropriate accessibility to fit your specific needs. We always prioritize accessibility over star level of hotel to ensure the highest level of access.  The Imperial Cities Tour offers several options for accessibility across the range of hotels and riads.

Excursions

You will mostly encounter flat surfaces or access ramps as necessary.  The Roman ruins of Volubilis and the heart of the ancient Fes medina are considered adapted experiences. To experience the Roman ruins up close, there is uneven and rougher terrain. In Fes, you may encounter an occasional step that requires a small portable ramp (for power wheelchair users).  Pushers are available for hire and recommended for these experiences.
