Jnane El Harti – The Dinosaur Park

Jnane El Harti more affectionately known as the Dinosaur Park by a few children I know is located right at the center of Gueliz across the street from McDonalds and the Gueliz Post Office.  You will not find green grass to run on or playground toys to play on, but there are many paths to walk on and enjoy. The entrance is usually a wide open piazza with a large center fountain that can be seen from any corner of the Place du 16 Novembre roundabout. Today it was obscured by the white peaks of tents set up temporarily to display and sell local artisan work. The garden gates are not far from the fountain. Entry is free. Pick a path and enjoy a variety of trees, cacti and lots of rose bushes. Plenty of birds have made their home in some of the taller trees towards the back of the park and it was a joy to watch them and hear them throughout the park. The park is divided up into several sections including one dedicated to children. A large sand pit holds two very large model dinosaurs as well as several swing-set frames. Unfortunately no swings remain and there is no other play ground equipment. Still, the large sand pit is a nice place for children to run and play as well as the central courtyard which is open and paved.  Benches line the walking paths and a mobile library located at the center of the park loans books in French and Arabic to park goers, with several children’s books to choose from.  The Jnane El Harti may not be in the same catagorie as the grand  Menera Gardens or the chic Majorelle Gardens or the sophisticated Cyber Park but it is a lovely shaded spot perfect for a rest and breath of fresh air and best of all it is completely accessible!
